The Saxon state government has legislated to extend students’ individual standard period of study for the winter semester 2021/22. The Saxon Freedom of Higher Education Act (SächsHSFG) explicitly provides for this possibility in the exceptional circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic, in order to avoid disadvantages for students.

After the formal legal examination of the draft ordinance and the hearing of the state students’ representation and the State Rectors’ Conference, the ordinance was formally brought to the attention of the Saxon state parliament’s science committee in January, according to a press release of the Saxon State Ministry for Science, Culture and Tourism. With the promulgation on 19 February 2022, the changes to the standard period of study officially come into force and apply retroactively for the entire winter semester 2021/22.

Background:
The Saxon state parliament already amended the SächsHSFG at the end of 2020, initially clearing the way for the extension of students’ individual standard study period for the 2020 summer semester and the 2020/21 winter semester. At the same time, it created the option of making similar arrangements for further semesters. This meant that it was already possible to extend students’ individual standard period of study for the summer semester 2021 by law.
